Overriding Document content type - good idea?

I'm wanting to modify the Document content type to add in a custom site column which will be a mandatory field on every document uploaded to SharePoint. I have a content type hub and will publish the Document content type down to all subscriber sites.

Firstly, is this a good idea? When I try to add to update the default document ct I get a warning that some fields are sealed. I think this is due to the "update all inheriting content types" checkbox being set to "yes". Is this the correct way to do this?

Secondly, if my column that I push down is an MMS column then I get all sorts of errors when creating new sites. I have located a number of errors which present me with a warning that "field types are not installed". I would assume that this is due to some problem with the new document content type now containing an new column. The odd thing is that if I create the column to be a non-MMS field i.e. text/choice then the problem disappears.

Any advice on the best approach here would be greatly appreciated.

Taken from ULS...

The element of type 'Module' for feature 'PortalLayouts' (id: 5f3b0127-2f1d-4cfd-8dd2-85ad1fb00bfc) threw an exception during activation: One or more field types are not installed properly. Go to the list settings page to delete these fields.
