I had attended some event of MS where I had heard that SP2013 gives you an option to get rid of FIM and sync directly with AD (no writeback) just like the old 2007 days.
In my SP2013 farm, I created a user profile application and wanted to create a connection (where I was hoping to get an option to sync directly with AD without FIM).
but it asked me to start the user profile sync server and now in the event logs I see that it is starting the FIM Server and doing the exact same things what SP2010 used to do.
So what has changed in SP2013? Can't we fully get rid of the FIM Service (and the dreaded problem of User Profile Sync hanging with "starting" state).
