Automatic Crawled Properties in 2013

It's my understanding that site columns should automatically show up as crawled properties in 2013, but it doesn't seem to be working for me.  This is what I've done so far.

  • Created a new site column.
  • Created a new content type that extends 'product with image' and added that site column to the content type.
  • Created a new catalog 'app'.
  • Added the new content type to the list and removed 'product with image'.
  • Added one row to the list, filled out all fields (including my new column) and approved the list item.
  • Performed a full crawl from central admin.

I've gone to the search schema in the site collection and central admin and I don't see my column under crawled properties.  I've tried search for it by name, I also tried looking for it by hand by looking at the 'ows_q_TEXT' crawled properties.  I believe that is what it should be named ...

Just to be clear, the catalog and search are working fine, I have cross site publishing working.  I'd just like to add an additional column to the product so I can display it across on the 'public' side.

Does anyone know how this works? Is there a particular feature I have to enable,  maybe a timer job or a service that needs to be running?  The only services that I have provisioned so far are the search service and the managed metadata service.

Thanks

Joe
