Filtering based on a multiline text feild in order to create a list view

Essentially my department has a list where it records issue updates, and the content is posted to a multiline text column titled "comments." A typical post would include the date and text describing the update.

I'm trying to get SP create a view based on "contains [today]." That way every time someone leaves a comment with the current date, the view will display items that have actually have updated content rather than just corrections (like typos or edits to other fields). I'm trying to avoid a solution that will force me to use a date/time column like "created" or "modified" or "date due" because those are sensitive to any change from any column whereas comments with dates would accurately reflect new content related updates for the items.

I've apparently successfully done this once in a test site by literally just creating the view and assigning the filter with SPs basic interface. But now I'm struggling to duplicate it in an existing list on a parent site. What's happening now is that the current list will add the item to the view, but if I navigate away it disappears and won't come back. My first instinct was that enhanced rich text fields couldn't be filtered, so I've tried playing with the settings of the "comments" field to no avail. Some people have told me that this content type (mutiline text) doesn't support indexing or filtering, but I've done it on a subsite, I just need to figure out what went right so I can duplicate it.
