Office document opened as read-only on Win 7 machines

Hi

While many of our users start to upgrade to Windows 7 we noticed that everyone of them suddenly cannot open Office documents in edit mode. Documents are opened in read-only mode and there's no option to save it back to Sharepoint.

This issue does not occur on Windows XP used by very same users/domain accounts.

Issue is not tied to particular office version, just OS - both win 7 32 bit and 64 bit

Our setup is MOSS 2007 SP 2 on Win Server 2003 R2 SP2, all users access site using HTTPS

What we tried:

Enabling WebClient service, adding site to trusted/intranet zones, using with machine that has no antivirus software, fiddling with office trust settings, changing registry settings on client machine:

WebClient setting AuthForwardServerList, both WebClient and Office setting - BasicAuthLevel

nothing makes any difference, I also used procmon.exe to see if any dll's have denied access - negative...

my last attempt involved using fiddler to sniff the traffic - and that's where I noticed that when opening a document, before a request to document is made there is a request to document library it self - on Windows 7 this request returns error 404.  Why is that happening? If I copy and paste the url in browser, it navigates to document library just fine! Now it kind of makes sense that Office opens document in read only if library where it originated from suddenly becomes inaccessible but why is this happening? how come request to document it self is successful then?
