SkyDrive Pro and required checkout

Dear experts,

We are testing SharePoint 2013 with Office 2013 and SkyDrive Pro (I'm using the trial versions of Office and Windows 7 from Technet in a virtual machine, if that matters). I set up a document library on a team site, and set it to require checkout. I have used the Sync link to sync the folder to my computer.

In Word, if I open the document from the local windows explorer (or ctrl-o to the local folder), it gives me an offline copy notification. If I click the error, then do connect to server and re-open from server, it shows it to me in read only, with the yellow bar that I need to check it out. Is it supposed to require a re-open event to give you the expected checkout required notice?

If I ignore the offline copy notification, make changes, and then try to save, it gives me an upload failed message and the option to checkout and upload. That seems to work OK, but it breaks if someone checks it out in the meantime.

In Excel, if I open the document from the local windows explorer, I get notified that it is in read-only mode. If I click on edit, it allows me to do that, but does not check it out. On the first save, it gives me the option to checkout and upload, but then it gives an upload failed message. I have to chose to keep my version or the server version, even though no one other than me has touched the file. This will be really confusing for users.

If I know to go to the offline copy error and reopen, then I can do a force re-open and checkout, but users aren't likely to click on a small dialog in the bottom right over the big yellow read-only bar at the top.

Since this all seems clunky and error prone, can anyone confirm that this is actually how things are supposed to work? I want to make sure that I don't have a problem with my setup here.

I know that we can disable the checkout requirement and things work much more smoothly, but that is not an option for some of our libraries. Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Brian
