Can a custom list editor be created to work like an auction?

I am an experienced C# developer, but brand new to SharePoint development. I was very impressed by how fast I can create a site in SharePoint, I have two questions if they can be answered here.

I am deciding if I can do everything I need to do in SharePoint versus standard Asp.Net which I know how to do, although building things by hand even with master pages seem to take me a long time so if SharePoint can work I am all for it.

My question is, if I create a custom list editor, can I query against like I can with TSQL and stored procedures?

Can a list display 1 column for the current bid and then another column display a button with bid 'x' (next increment) amount? And if clicked the new highest bid becomes the bid amount and the button changes to the next increment?

In a C# user control I know how to do this, in SharePoint I don't know where to start.

Another question is when an auction expires at a given time, are there any events I can setup on a list such as expired flag, or can I write a Windows Service to query my SharePoint site on a regular basis and give me a list of 'sold' auctions, expired auctions that didn't sell, etc. so I can send out notifications?

And last question, I was looking at contoso bistro (Sample SharePoint site) and it doesn't say Office 365 at the top like my public site does. Is there an option to not show that, or does it take a higher subscription level or something?

Thanks, sorry for asking so many questions, I feel like a fish out of water.
