Streaming Videos from SAN/DFS without using Sharepoint Storage

Hi,

What we’re trying to achieve is to use Sharepoint 2013 Video Asset library to store videos and metadata and allow users to search/browse for videos and play them within a web page.

However, the solution is deploying into a customer with 3 sites and they don’t want video to play across the WAN, due to bandwidth issues. They also only have a single SharePoint 2013 server and are licensed for Standard Edition.

What I’m hoping we can achieve is to insert videos into the asset library as a link to a file on a NAS. Then when the user’s browser goes to the SharePoint page, the video is played, but directly from the NAS to the Browser (bypassing the SharePoint server).

If we can achieve that then we can set up DFS to replicate the videos to a NAS at each of the three sites and users will play the video from their local NAS (by the magic that is DFS). In other words, the SharePoint page will contain a link to something like <dfs-root>/folder/video.mp4. When the browser is directed to that link, it will be directed to the local NAS for that site and play the video (within the web page) but from the local NAS.

Option 2 would be that the video plays in e.g. Media Player, rather than directly in the browser… I prefer it to be within the web page though.

Is this possible?

Thanks In advance for your help.
