Content Type default value

Hi forums,

So in my test library below, you'll see I have 3 content types, the default "Document" and then two custom content types "Production Approval" and "Go Ahead Form". In my library you'll also see I have a document uploaded, and a column in the view for "Content Type" which is one of the built in columns.

The obvious functionality I'd want is when I select 'New Document' and choose a content type, I want that to appear in the Content Type column. However, it instead always default as "Document" no matter which starting template I choose. Is there a way around this? If I select New Document > Production Approval, I want the Content Type Column metadata for that document to be "Production Approval".. but not sure how to get this to work?

Any ideas?
