Word crashes when using people picker field in information panel

Description of my case:
I have a document library that uses content types with document templates attached.

The problem is as follows:

When users create a new document they are supposed to fill in fields in the information panel. Among these fields there are two people picker fields(see picture below). They are free to write in the fields, if however they were to press 'Check names' or 'Add people from the address book' Word crashes. It shows a dialogue box telling us 'Microsoft Word has stopped working'. End of problem. Has been occuring since at least december.

Further description:

This happens regardless of what user and browser is used. Or whether the field is obligatory. So i can't see that this would be a client side problem. You can download a copy of an existing document(*), edit it, and upload it before setting the properties in SharePoint. Or upload an empty document for that matter, and assign both Maintainer and Approver to it.

* If i download a copy of a document the fields in the information panel all say that they are 'Currently unavailable' (picture below). with the exception of the Title- and a Choice-field. I suspect this to also be a part of the same issue. I've read on some blogs that this is because internet connection is down. For me, this is not the case. Users have reported that this error has been around since day one.

Some of the things i have tried is(short description followed by link):

  • I looked at the templates, whether the ContentTypeID was wrong. It matched.

  • Using Fiddler to track whether there is a connection error while downloading the document.

Any suggestions? Thank you.
