SharePoint Online - % Complete of task list not calculated

Can't find SharePoint Online category/forum so posting here. I was redirected here from the Office 365 Community by a MSFT support regarding my question in the subject, https://community.office365.com/en-us/f/154/t/439669

I will just paste what I posted in the O365 community below:

I wanted to use SharePoint task list as a project management and put % Complete as one of the fileds for my tasks. It is an in-built field but does not really calculate the precentage. For example if I have 4 sub tasks for a task and I tick one of them as complete (100%), I would expect the top task to go 25% but that is not happening. This used to be the case when we used the standalone MS Project and was expecting same in SP Online task lists

I checked the properties of % Complete in List Settings and see its Type as "Number". I have two questions here:

if the % Complete is an in-built attribute I would have expected it to be a calculated field (it changes to 100% when I click on the check-box "Mark as complete" and back to 0 % when I uncheck it), any reason why it's not calculating for its parent task?

My next question is if the in-built default % Complete is not really calculating, is there a "workaround" to have another column say "% of task completed" (not to make it same name as the in-built % Complete) and put a formula that calculates sub-tasks percentage and have that automatically calculated on the parent/top task? If there is a working formula can anyone share with me?

Thanks in advance,
Meti
