Display in a web part a subset of a +5000 items library

Infra: SharePoint 2013 OnPremise Farm

I have a Library that has more items than the 5000 limit and don't want to increase it.

Content approval is required on the library.

I want to display, in a web part on my home page, the items that require approval.

I had created a view for that and it worked great when the number of items was less than 5000, but now, that view doesn't work anymore.  I also learned that you cannot index the Approval Status Column.

Would anyone have an idea of how I could display those items that require approval in a web part ?
