Many of our customers have begun to experience the following error (below) when attempting to  open a project tasks list (171) in SharePoint 2013 from the ribbon tool bar option “Open with Project”. If the client machine being used to access the site is using Windows 7 and IE 11, your sure to see this issue. We also believe it has some relatsionship with the March 2015 and April 2015 CU. This issues was also seen on Office 365, read more here.

I wonder if this issue being actively worked by the Microsoft Product team? I have heard it is but I haven't heard any progress. A solution needs to be found here. Also if anyone knows of any other workarounds, I would appreciate this information?

Error Message

“This operation requires that Microsoft Project Professional 2013 is installed.”

Reproducing the Issue

Prerequisites: Windows 7, IE 11, Project 2013 Professional, SharePoint 2013, Tasks List(171), March 2015 CU or April 2015 CU.

  1. Create an OOTB team site in SharePoint 2013 Foundation (using March or April 2015 CU)
  2. Add an OOTB tasks list(171) to the team site.
  3. Open the tasks list and then click on List on the ribbon and then click "Open with Project
  4. You should see the error pop up.

There are two known workarounds.

These are mentioned here on our site. This issue affects hundreds of our customers and these workaround as not a viable solution.

Thanks
